Coalition Senator Ian MacDonald has just returned from a 3-week tour of northern and regional Australia presenting and discussing the Coalition’s 2030 Vision for Developing Northern Australia discussion paper. Forums were held in Mackay, Townsville, Cairns, Darwin, Kununurra, Broome, Karratha and Hughenden, and Mount Isa.
Senator Macdonald said ‘the response was fantastic, with people from key industry groups, government, government agencies, health, education and sciences attending to join in the conversation. Issues raised ranged from infrastructure development, health, education and agricultural support and development’.
B4BA prepared a Response to that paper, which pointed out that the economic and social development of rural and remote Australia relies on effective telecommunications. Telecommunications was not included as a key topic within the Vision paper. From Senator MacDonald’s report on the forums he conducted, the only sites that raised telecommunications issues were Kununurra and Broome in WA, with Kununurra residents raising the need for mobile telephone reception along highways.
